VB-XL™ Adapted Activity Guide

Written By Linda Carr

Introduction

It's a volleyball trainer, only bigger. The Sportime VB-XL is easier to see, it's light weight and fun to play with. Its true flight makes it the best choice for groups of multiple ages and skill levels. For just teaching eye-hand coordination or teaching volleyball skills this is THE BALL! This guide is designed to help you and your students get the most from your VB-XL in an adapted environment.

Parts and Safety

The VB-XL is built with a sewn, Cordley synthetic leather cover and quality bladder with a standard athletic valve. It is 16" fully inflated.
Safety Suggestions: The ball use should not include kicking games.

Objectives

As physical educators and group leaders providing skill development and fun in a group setting can be challenging. The Sportime VB-XL's larger size, lighter weight and true flight will improve opportunity for skill development for some at the same time providing a fun level of participation and team cooperation.

Games and Activities

Wipe Out
The purpose of this game is to get all players on your team's court into the end zone.
Equipment: VB-XL, net and a court with an end zone behind.
There are 6 to 8 players per team. Players get to move to the end zone by catching a thrown volleyball. The game starts with player from team A throwing (serving) ball over net. If a player on team B catches the ball, he/she gets to move into his/her team's end zone area. As ball is thrown back and forth over the net, players catching ball move into their respective team's end zone. If the ball rolls into the end zone, one of the players in end zone is allowed to throw ball over the net to one of own teammates. The first team in end zone wins.
Note:
  • If the served ball is caught by a teammate in the end zone, then that player may call a teammate over.
  • If thrown out of bounds, players roll the ball under net and have team throw again.
  • If the ball is thrown (or served) into the end zone and hits wall first, a player must go back onto court.

Target Volleyball
The purpose of this game is to encourage good teamwork in using volleyball skills to get the ball over net.
Equipment: 2 volleyballs, 2 volleyball nets, 6 hula-hoops and two 4 x 8' mats.
There are 3 to 10 players per team. Set up the nets about 20' apart, parallel to each other. Within the "alley" formed by the nets stand mats on edge, connecting them to form a box and scatter the hula-hoops. Put each team (of 2) on the outside of each net. After players find designated spots, each team will get volleyball. To start play, the server bumps the ball to a teammate, who will then set the ball to another teammate. The third hit can be either a bump or set over the net. The goal is to get the ball over the net in three hits and score 1 point. If the ball goes over the net in three (3) hits and lands on or in a hula-hoop, that team gets 2 points. If the ball goes over in three hits and lands inside the box, that team gets 3 points.
Note:

  • Lower the net, use variety of balls (volleyballs, beach balls, etc.).
  • Allow students who can not bump or set to catch and throw ball to another player.
  • Require only 2 hits.
  • Allow the ball 1 bounce before student catches, bumps or sets ball.
  • Use 3 mats for "box" or more hula-hoops.

Volleyball Squares
The purpose of the game is for players to play in their own space, shifting in a defined area, not all over the court.
Equipment: Net set at 3 to 5' dividing 2 courts
Each court is marked off in a grid (squares). One player starts the game by serving over the net. Players may play only those balls that land (bounce) in their square. The ball must be thrown or bumped over the net (or to another teammate). If the ball does not bounce once (or bounces more than once), then the serving team is awarded the point. If the serving team does not correctly return the volley, then a side out is called and the other team serves.
Note:

  • Allow more than one bounce for lesser skilled students.
  • Put 2 students in one square.
  • Use lower nets.

Table Volleyball
The purpose of this game is to teach eye-hand coordination, game concepts, volleyball skills and teamwork.
Equipment: Table (lunchroom-no attached seats) and a VB-XL™.
Using the table for a net (and to keep the ball at waist level) place teams on either side of table, seated players closest to table, standing players in second line. Start the game by bouncing the ball on the table. With seated and standing players, rotation is limited to own row. The second row players may score points by hitting ball so that it rebounds off table (this provides the front row the chance to volley). If a ball hits the floor without hitting the table, the point goes to the team to which it was hit.
Note:

  • Use a 40" beach ball if lighter ball needed.
  • Use a coach/spotter to keep the ball from going off the ends of table.
  • The more skilled, seated players can be placed further from table (even the second row).
  • Seat players with a delayed reaction time closer to table, so the ball doesn't hit the ground before they try to hit it.
