ParaStrip™ Adapted Activity Guide

Written By Dan Cariaga

Introduction

You'll immediately recognize the versatility of the ParaStrip. You can use ParaStrip as you would a traditional parachute. Your students can also use it to launch objects. Because ParaStrip has 3 different colors, you can place the ParaStrip horizontally flat on the floor and use each color strip as a lane for crawling, walking or ambulating from one end to the other. The ParaStrip can also be used for races and relays. The ParaStrip (with the 2 Big Red™ Base System) can be used as a net for volleyball and other net activities. This guide is designed to help you and your students get the most from your ParaStrip.

Objectives for Use

Objectives for the ParaStrip include successfully eye tracking a moving object; catching and striking an object with hands and log rolling from the back to the stomach.

Activities

Balloon Volleyball
This indoor activity uses a ParaStrip with the Big Red Base System to create a volleyball net and a 12" balloon for the volleyball. Each team sits on the floor, bench and chairs or in wheelchairs in one line facing the ParaStrip. The object is for the students to volley the balloon on their side and strike (spike) the balloon so that it goes over the opponent's heads and out of their reach. Teams may volley the ball on their side as many times as needed, as long as the balloon does not touch the floor.

Keep It Alive (One-Two-Three-Over)
This indoor or outdoor activity uses the ParaStrip with the Big Red Base System to create a volleyball net and a volleyball (or TechTackBall™ or BiggieFrog™). The game starts with one team soft tossing the ball over the net. An opposing team must catch the ball and then softly toss the ball to 2 of their team members. The third player will continue the rally by tossing it over the net. A point is awarded when a ball hits the ground on the opposing side.

Pigs In A Blanket
Roll one student at a time in the ParaStrip™, then unroll him/her by pulling on one end.

Hit-A-Stripe
Two students hold the ends of the ParaStrip perpendicular to the floor. Students throw TechTackBalls™ at the ParaStrip to earn points. Each stripe is worth different amount of points. To make it more difficult, have students holding the ends raise and lower the ParaStrip.

Lagging
Place the ParaStrip horizontally flat on the floor. Use any of the Sportime specialized beanbags to toss on one of the 3 stripes. However, the student must announce which stripe they intend to toss the beanbag. If the ball lands on a line no points are given. If a beanbag lands completely on another stripe, subtract those points from the score. This can be done individually as teams.

Clean Up Your Own Back Yard
This indoor or outdoor activity uses the ParaStrip with the Big Red Base System. Use as many Sportime specialized beanbags or TechTackBalls as you need. Scatter the balls on both sides of the ParaStrip. Students have one minute to throw the beanbags and balls into the neighbors' back yard. The team with the least number of objects gets one point. The game is continuous.

Blind Catch
This indoor or outdoor activity uses the ParaStrip with the Big Red Base System. Players sit, scattered on each side of the ParaStrip. Students should be low enough so that they can not see the players on the other team. Players throw a ball over the ParaStrip. The object is for the players on the other side to catch the ball. One point is awarded every time a player catches the ball.
Variations:Use more than one ball. Use Sportime specialized beanbags, TechTackBalls or SensationBall™.
